Internship Program Details

ELAC Library Internships will vary from person-to-person and semester-to-semester. Below is an outline of what the internships can and will include:

Reference/Research Help (Required)

  • Help students with information and technology needs at the research help desk
  • Guide students to appropriate information resources both on- and off-campus
  • Teach students how to use various information technologies including the library catalog and databases
  • Connect students with campus and community resources

Instruction (Required)

  • Observe information literacy workshops and one-shot library orientations
  • Create information literacy instruction plans and activities for workshops
  • Co-teach and solo teach various library workshops throughout the semester

Special Projects (Optional; Tailored to Interns' Goals and Objectives)

  • Develop LibGuides, bookmarks, flyers, or other instructional handouts
  • Create short informational video tutorials
  • Create eye-catching book displays for Heritage Months, Banned Books Week, etc.
  • Collection development, including weeding and selecting in specific subject areas

What are the minimum qualifications to apply?

  • You must be enrolled full-time in a graduate level MLIS (Library and Information Science) program.
  • You must be able to work in-person for the duration of our 16-week fall semester.

How do I apply for the ELAC Library Internship Program?

  1. Complete the Fall 2024 Internship Application by May 19, 2024.
  2. If you are unable to upload your resume to the above form, email it to Rita Suarez.
  3. We will follow up with candidates in May 2024 via email to set up a short interview.

What is the deadline to apply?

  • Fall 2024 applications are due by May 19, 2024.

Is the internship paid?

  • To be determined based on yearly budget allocations. Check back for updates in April 2024.

What is the time commitment for the ELAC Library Internship Program?

  • Interns are expected to complete 100-135 hours during our 16-week fall semester. Hours may vary based on the graduate student's program and internship requirements.
  • Interns are typically scheduled to work in-person twice a week, between Monday-Thursday from 8am - 5pm.

What will I be doing as an intern? 

  • You will work closely with Librarian mentors and a peer-intern. Read the "Internship Program Details" on this page for more examples of intern activities. A typical internship work plan includes:
    • Reference and research help (required)
    • Classroom instruction (required)
    • Instructional materials development (optional)
    • Outreach and promotion projects (optional)
    • Collection development (optional)
