Step 1: Brainstorm!
It's always a good idea to begin your research by asking yourself, "What is it that I want my paper to answer?"
By developing a research question, you can focus your research topic and brainstorm keywords that will help you quickly find relevant evidence, support, or counter-arguments.
Narrow down your research topic and develop a research question by asking yourself the 5Ws.
Here's an example:
MY TOPIC: Bilingual Education
- WHO? Elementary school children
- WHAT? Bilingual education
- WHERE? Public schools in California
- WHEN? In the last 10 years
- WHY? Why has official bilingual education been taken out of public schools in Los Angeles?
FOCUSED RESEARCH QUESTION: Does bilingual education in public elementary schools help or hinder the cognitive development of school-aged children?
KEYWORDS: Bilingual education, public schools, California, elementary schools, learning, cognitive development, child development
