Borrowing Library Materials (Faculty/Staff)

An employee identification (ID) card with the ELAC library barcode number attached to the back of the card, or ELAC library card is required for borrowing. For special loans, please ask the Librarian on duty for assistance.

Placing Textbooks on Reserve

Instructors may place materials on reserve for their courses. The library encourages instructors to place textbooks on reserve so the students can use them in the library. Reserve materials may include textbooks, lecture notes, supplemental course materials, etc. Loose materials such as photocopies should be in a folder or binder ready for use.

To place an item on reserve, instructors must present their library card along with the material(s) at the circulation desk for processing. You will be asked to fill out a textbook reserve form.

        • Discipline Book Allocation Program

In 2007, the library began a program to allocate funds to departments (subdivided by disciplines where appropriate) for the purchase of books. The funds allocated are a minimum amount set aside for a discipline, not a maximum. The purpose is to generate more book requests from faculty to better support their curriculum and students and to distribute purchases appropriately across all disciplines.

Due to lack of responses by some disciplines, in 2008 the library implemented a policy of use it or lose it. The principal reason for the policy was because it creates a burden on the library to defer purchases to late in the buying season. In practice this use it or lose it policy means that the departments/disciplines who requested books in the past year would receive funds again and disciplines that did not request books in any given year would not receive an allotment the following year. However, whatever year faculty request books for their discipline, they will receive a budget the following year. This does not mean that no funds will be spent on a discipline if no requests are made; it just means that the librarians will be the sole determiners of what titles get ordered and what amount will be expended.

Department chairs determine if they will collect their faculty's recommendations and submit all requests themselves or if they want to permit their faculty to submit requests directly to the Collection Development Librarian, Ran Gust ( or 323-265-8628).
