Useful Art Terms for Research

  • Artist's Book: a work of art expressed in book format; may be made of any material(s) and may or may not be shaped like a traditional book
  • multivolume dictionary of art on a bookshelfCatalogue Raisonné: a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known works of an artist (or all of their known works in a particular medium)
  • Exhibition Catalog: a comprehensive list of all exhibits at an art exhibition, sometimes also containing illustrations, interviews with or biographies of artists, and/or analyses of the exhibits
  • Festschrift: a collection of essays celebrating an individual, usually an academic; festschriften aren't specific to art but some are created for artists or art historians
  • Livres d'Artiste: a limited edition or one-of-a-kind book containing original artwork rather than copied illustrations
  • Monograph: a book, usually on a scholarly subject
