Streaming Video Collections

• Streaming videos are licensed movies and films that you can watch (stream) on a computer, smart device, or television via an Internet connection.
• Popular streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO do not offer subscriptions to academic libraries.
• However, students, staff, and faculty have free access to thousands of licensed films through the library's subscriptions to the streaming video platforms listed below. Most videos are captioned and licensed for classroom use.

• Faculty can search the Swank and Kanopy platforms for films available for licensing and submit a request. Contact Amy Guy, E-Resources Librarian, at guyal@elac.edu if you need assistance locating a film or video.
• The library will review the request and respond within 3 business days. 
• The library will only purchase Kanopy and Swank licenses for films required for course assignments.
• Licenses typically cost $120 per film for a one-year license.
• Due to budget constraints, the library can only purchase film licenses requested by instructors.
• Visit the library's Kanopy Guide to learn how to submit Kanopy film requests. 

All videos in Academic Video Online (AVON) and Films on Demand are ready for immediate viewing. No additional license fees are required unlike Kanopy and Swank.

• Access all streaming video collections via the Streaming Video menu located at the bottom of the ELAC Library homepage.
• You will be asked login with your LACCD account before a database loads. Review off-campus login directions here.
• Contact E-Resources Librarian Amy Guy (guyal@elac.edu) if you need assistance.

• The library can try to purchase a Digital Site License (DSL) for films not available in the library's streaming video collections if library funds are available. 
• Send requests at least 3-4 months in advance to librarian Amy Guy (guyal@elac.edu). The process can be very lengthy.

Kanopy: Videos can be embedded inside of Canvas using the embed code generated by Kanopy, but will still require students to login with their ACE account.

Academic Video Online

In your Canvas Rich Text Editor, there should be a small icon that reads “Apps” when you hover over it. It looks like a plug. Click the icon, open the menu, and look for Alexander Street Video (the list is alphabetical, so it should be near the top).

Hint: If this your first time first time accessing Alexander Street, you will need to click "View All."

From there, a search interface should pop up. Search for the video you want and then choose the embed option you prefer (medium or large). The video will embed automatically.

The LA County Library and the Los Angeles Public Library systems provide access to Kanopy. Film requests are not required for most films. Note: Public and academic library versions vary. Anyone living in Los Angeles County can apply online for digital cards.

• LA County Library: Apply online for a free Digital Library Card. 
• Los Angeles Public Library: Apply online for a free e-Card.
• Both libraries limit users to10 films per month.

The streaming video company, Intelecom, went out of business in 2021, and ELAC's access to their platform ended on June 30, 2021. However, you can still access select Intelecom Learning films through ELAC's Films on Demand streaming video platform.
