Hello Huskies!

ELAC Library would like to provide updates on the library's plans for reopening for the Fall 2021 semester. Since we were last on campus in March 2020, many changes have taken place. Please read the following information.

Physical Library Operating Hours for Monterey Park Campus

  • Monday through Thursday 9am to 7pm
  • Friday 9am to 5pm
  • Closed weekends and holidays

Physical Library Operating Hours for South Gate Campus

  • Monday through Thursday 9am to 7pm
  • Friday 9am to 4pm
  • Closed weekends and holidays

Online Services

Please note: To meet our goals of having onsite and online services, we are reducing our building hours to create room for online services. Hours are subject to change due to unknown COVID situation.

COVID-19 Campus Protocols

Please visit the Los Angeles Community College District COVID-19 page for details about the Safe Return to Work plan. There is a great wealth of information for students, faculty, and staff about returning to campus and health information.

Library Safety Plan

Within the Library, we are observing the following:

  • Plexiglass at the Circulation, Research Help, and Tech Help desks
  • Reduced overall seating capacity
  • Physical distancing at study tables, carrels, and computer workstations
  • Group study rooms are closed until further notice
  • Computers are only for ELAC students
  • Sanitizing/alcohol-based wipes and hand sanitizer available for self-service cleaning
  • Regular cleaning of computer workstations - self-service
  • Non-surgical masks available
  • Mask covering both nose and mouth required

What the Library is NOT doing:

  • No screening for temperature at the library entrance
  • We will not be quarantining returned items
  • We will not clean computers after each user leaves. Wipes are available for those who would like to clean the computer station before using it.

What if someone appears sick in the library?

If someone is visibly ill, please call Choonhee Rhim (Library Chair, (323) 265-8625) to address the issue. Individuals coming to campus should check-in online through the appropriate self-screening questionnaire for COVID-19 depending on which campus you will be at: Monterey Park or South Gate

Library users are obligated to comply with campus policies on posted signage. This will include a self-screening questionnaire notifying them that they cannot enter the Library or any other campus building if they have symptoms. Again, everyone must wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth while inside the Library.

Textbook Reserves

For the Fall semester, we will offer in-person checkout of our 2-hour library-use-only textbook reserves. Faculty, if you would like your textbooks placed in the Library’s reserve collection, please bring them to the Circulation Desk where you will be asked to fill out a short form.

Please note: Textbooks will not be quarantined upon return, and textbooks are not available for semester loan.

Chromebook Loans

Our Chromebooks are currently on a 2-hour library-use only loan period. Only currently enrolled ELAC students are eligible to checkout a Chromebook. Students must fill out a Chromebook checkout agreement at the Library’s Tech Help Desk (or Circulation desk if you are at the South Gate Library).

District Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

We will resume our District-wide ILL services this fall. Students can place a hold on non-textbook items for interlibrary loan through the Library’s OneSearch catalog. Students will be notified via student email when the item is ready for pick up.

Library Instructions, Orientations, and Workshops

We will continue to offer Zoom visits and in-person instruction for classes when available. Faculty can submit an instruction request form for their online, hybrid, or in-person class visit. Library workshops will be online only. Students can view and take our online workshops here.

Important Policy and Codes of Conduct

  • Students must present their ELAC/LACCD student ID card to check out any items
  • There is no food or drink allowed in the library.
  • Visitors must wear a face covering or a mask covering their nose and mouth in the library
    • Visitors who refuse to properly wear a face covering or a mask will be asked to leave the library and may be referred to Dean of Student Services.
  • Due to COVID-19 pandemic capacity recommendation on seating within the library, use of library computers and library area by community members is temporarily suspended to allow for priority access by current ELAC students, staff, and faculty.
  • Library computers are only for currently enrolled ELAC students.

In Conclusion

Thank you for reading through this very information-heavy email! If you have questions, comments, and concerns, please share them with Choonhee Rhim via email at rhimcl@elac.edu or phone at (323) 265-8625. Your feedback is essential to a successful return to campus for the library.

While our building may have closed, we never stopped providing excellent instruction, research help, programs, and services to our students and faculty. The pandemic isn't over, we're entering a new phase, and we are adjusting to the new environment.

With best wishes for a successful year,

Choonhee Rhim on behalf of the Library Team
