Textbook Publishers Restrict E-Textbook Sales
The following publishers will not allow libraries to purchase an e-textbook version of their publications:
Pearson
Cengage
McGraw Hill
Oxford University Press
Most publishers of ‘common reads,’ popular fiction, and popular nonfiction
Many health sciences texts
In the many courses that have adopted textbooks by these publishers, students who do not purchase the textbook will not have any alternative access to the textbook content. These publishers have the resources to support a global reliance on flexible distribution and choose not to. See the CSUN Library statement for more information.

Alternative Textbook Options
We can help you explore and identify textbook alternatives, including:
1. OER Materials
Adopt an open educational resource (OER). OERs are freely available educational materials that are openly licensed to allow for re-use and modification by instructors. Visit the ELAC Library OER Guide and/or Find OER by Department Guide to locate open textbooks and other open learning resources.
2. Library E-Books (Non-textbooks) & Database Articles
Use an existing e-book in the relevant subject area from the library’s e-book collections or request that the library purchase one. Login with your ACE account.
ELAC Library Article Databases
EBSCO E-Book Collection
Gale E-Books
ProQuest E-Book Central
Note: Some academic e-books are not considered textbooks and are therefore available for the library to purchase as e-books; however, Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions can limit the number of simultaneous users and limit copying, printing, and downloading.
3. Library Resources in Canvas
Learn how to link to content from the library’s existing collection of electronic resources (tutorials, e-books, journal articles, streaming media, and other digital materials) in Canvas. Visit our faculty support page to learn more.
